Long Wood Community Woodland, a community co-operative, was formed in 2003 by a group of residents and representatives of the community councils in the Lampeter area. The site is formed from a mosaic of tree species being a mixture of hardwood and softwood stands
Originally a management agreement with the Forestry Commission the social enterprise developed when the directors successfully applied for a grants from the Big Lottery Community Asset Transfer Fund and the Ceredigion Social Enterprise Development Fund allowing the directors to purchase the 125 hectare site from the Forestry Commission and employ a project manager and support staff to begin to develop it as a sustainable business and community leisure facility.
Further support from Environment Wales has allowed Long Wood Community Woodland to employ wardens responsible for the upkeep of the woodland and development of our volunteer opportunities.
Our fantastic visitors’ centre, built from our own timber, will be a centre for our operations, offer a warm dry base for volunteers working with us in the woodland and be available to groups both local and from further afield.
Over the coming years Long Wood aims to establish itself as a source of quality timber and firewood as well as a site where visitors can come and enjoy the woodland as a leisure facility. The operation is operated on a not for profit basis with all proceeds being ploughed back into making improvements in both biodiversity and facilities within the woods.
Currently, alongside walkers, cyclists and equestrian use, Long Wood offers the following services:
- Firewood Sales - our firewood is sustainably harvested from Long Wood.
- Sawn Timber Sales - our sawn timber is sourced on site.
- Volunteer opportunities – We run weekly open sessions for volunteers to get hands on experience in the woods
- Educational resources – We run themed wildlife identification walks throughout spring summer and autumn.
- We are also currently developing other exciting woodland based services that will be announced here in the future.
Long Wood Offers opportunities for volunteers to get practical hands on experience in woodland management. Our trained wardens hold volunteer sessions every Wednesday throughout the year which are open for all to attend. The only things you need bring are suitable footwear and clothing and food and drinks for yourself.
The activities vary from week to week depending on management requirements within the woodland but to date have included coppicing, firewood stacking, landscaping as well as activities more specific to the build of the round wood framed visitors’ centre including shingle making. You can find out more about planned activities by contacting us, otherwise please feel free to just turn up on the morning. If you consider yourself to have a disability that you feel may cause access issues within the woodland please contact us in advance so that we can help you to plan your volunteer experience in advance.
